SAT Math practice, played against a clock

Qinno turns SAT Math practice into five-question timed battles: you and an opponent answer the same questions, and answering correctly and quickly scores more than answering correctly and slowly. The question bank holds 188 SAT Math questions — 108 written for timed battles and 80 for untimed practice — built against the published design of the digital SAT rather than assembled as a generic quiz.

What the digital SAT Math section actually looks like

Since 2024 the SAT is digital and adaptive. The Math section is 44 questions in 70 minutes, split into two 35-minute modules of 22 questions each. How you do on module 1 decides whether module 2 is the harder or the easier form, and within a module the questions run roughly easy to hard.

About 30% of real SAT Math questions are set in a science, social science or real-world context, and about a quarter ask you to type your own answer rather than choose one. Qinno’s practice bank includes 20 of those student-produced response questions, answered on a keypad built for the format.

A calculator is allowed the whole time — which changes what a good question is

The digital SAT permits a calculator for the entire Math section and Bluebook ships Desmos inside the app. So the test cannot ask you to compute: it asks you to model. "What is 15% of 240?" is not an SAT question, because reading the numbers into a calculator answers it.

That rule decides what goes into Qinno’s bank. Difficulty has to come from the number of modelling steps, from how well a condition is hidden, and from whether there is a tempting wrong path — never from arithmetic that is tedious by hand.

Timers are set per question, not per subject

Every question carries its own limit, chosen by how many steps it really takes: 45 seconds for a one-step model, 75 for a two-step question or one that starts with reading a chart, 120 for multi-step work or a hidden condition such as a discriminant that must be zero.

A five-question match therefore runs about seven minutes, which averages 87 seconds a question against the real test’s 95. Scoring rewards speed directly: a correct answer is worth 100 points plus up to 200 more for the time you leave on the clock, so 300 is a perfect question and a slow correct answer still beats a fast wrong one. The last question of every match is always drawn from the hardest tier.

Every wrong option is a specific mistake

The three wrong answers on a Qinno question are not filler numbers. Each one is written to be the value you arrive at by making one identifiable error — dropping a sign when moving a term, solving for x when the question asked for x + y, using the diameter where the radius belongs, stopping at an intermediate value, or reversing a ratio.

The rule that keeps this honest is that all four options must sit on the solution path, so covering them up and working the problem is the only way through. That matters more than it sounds: in medical-education research comparing very-short-answer questions with multiple choice, about 20% of multiple-choice questions were answered correctly from the options alone, against 4% for short answers.

Figures are drawn to scale

The digital SAT states that figures are drawn to scale unless a question says otherwise, which makes estimating from a diagram a legal strategy on the real test. Qinno’s geometry figures follow that convention rather than the deliberately distorted style used elsewhere.

The opposite failure gets checked too: a figure must not answer its own question. A diagram that plots the candidate points of a system-of-inequalities question, or draws the concept being asked about, has done the work for the student — those get the extra layer removed, not the figure.

What you do with the questions you miss

Every SAT Math question you get wrong, in a battle or in practice, lands in your mistake book automatically, with the answer you chose, the correct answer, and an AI explanation that works through the method and names what each wrong option corresponds to.

Mistake practice serves only your own missed questions: answer one correctly and it leaves the rotation, miss it again and it stays. Practice questions are deliberately harder on average than battle questions, because practice is untimed and you can actually work on paper.
